Color, Collage and Chaos

It all started with the first painting pictured below, “Ode to Matisse.” At the time I lived in both Boston and Maine. I had recently finished the piece in a painting class in Maine and the following week, when I walked into Millicent Cutler’s eclectic, colorful clothing shop, Ouimillie, on Charles Street in Boston I had a vision of how fabulous it would look together with her clothing. I showed an image of the painting to Millicent and with all the confidence of an expert curator Millicent said, “I love your aesthetic, let me give you a show.” And so it began, a few months and a dozen collages later, there we were surrounded by fabulous clothes, my collages, a dj, cocktails, and a fantastic crowd…my first exhibit.

Nostalgia, romance, wit, color, and a mix of mythology and history are the themes. Pattern over pattern, image over image, an indulgence in the crumpledness of things. Liberty of London prints, Hermes catalogs, John Derian’s antique images, trips to Art Basel Miami, and the MET’s exhibit of trompe l’oeil are some of the sources of my inspiration for this body of work.

I hope the pieces make you smile and even perhaps laugh out loud.
